Beschreibung

This course explores the causes, consequences and extent of social and economic inequalities in Germany and the U.S. from a sociological perspective. We discuss theories and concepts that help us to understand how different inequalities are maintained and reproduced within both countries. A particular interest lies on empirical work describing and comparing it. Special attention will be paid to heterogeneities, such as religion, race, ethnicity, social class and gender and how they combine to produce different outcomes and consequences for individuals and social groups in the respective countries. The goal of the class is to deepen the knowledge about the opportunities, challenges and limitations of a theoretical and empirical comparison of social inequalities between countries.
